Limpopo police and environmental officials are investigating the death of a businessman and farmer who was trampled by an elephant at Madimbo corridor on Monday.

The police said Nelson Masikhwa was with his cousin at the corridor when he was attacked by the elephant. His cousin escaped, but Masikhwa was not so lucky.

Masikhwa, 61, championed the land claims of Madimbo corridor, a portion of land from which villagers were forcibly removed between 1936 and 1950 by the apartheid government to make way for a buffer zone.

Masikhwa's death has raised questions as to what he was doing at the corridor when he was attacked.

The suspicions were also fuelled by the removal of his body without informing the police.

The corridor is under police watch after the army left the camp site last year April.

Captain Thivhonali Mugeri said an inquest docket case had been opened and the police were investigating.

Masikhwa's body was removed from the scene of the crime by community members and his relatives without the knowledge of the police.
