Roads and transport MEC Jackson Mthembu will be sworn in as the new speaker in the Mpumalanga legislature.

Mthembu will be deputised by Violet Siwela, an influential member of the provincial executive committee (PEC), while safety and security MEC Siphosezwe Masango is tipped to become the chief whip, with Thandi Shongwe as his deputy.

ANC provincial secretary Lucky Ndinisa, flanked by public works MEC Madala Masuku and provincial spokesperson Paul Mbenyane, made the announcement at the government complex yesterday.

Ndinisa said this followed a PEC special meeting in which a number of pertinent issues were ironed out on Monday afternoon.
