"Had he listened to me he would not have died like this. I had warned him several times to mend his ways but he would not listen to me and today he is dead,"

These were the words of Phumelele Ndiyane, a sangoma and the mother of suspected criminal Menzi Ntokozo Ndiyane, 23, when she arrived at the scene where her son was lying dead.

He was stoned, stabbed and beaten up by angry residents in KwaMashu's M-section yesterday morning.

In exceptionally horrible kangaroo court action, Ndiyane and his gang were hunted down and severely assaulted.

Ndiyane, described as a notorious criminal in the area, was killed in the early hours of yesterday.

When Sowetan arrived on the scene not a single person showed remorse. In fact, happiness was written all over their faces.

Some even made it clear that "maybe we will now sleep peacefully as night".

Blood was oozing from his back as he lay motionless .

"Oh, my child, had you listened to me you wouldn't have died like this," said the devastated mother.

The residents said after a series of crimes in the area a meeting was held last Sunday at which it was decided that members of the community would patrol the area at night.

"This was after a local priest was shot dead at his home during a robbery last week, said a community member

"On Monday night a group of residents patrolled the area and yesterday morning they were attacked by criminals who were against their patrolling," said the community member who asked not to be named.

She said during the attack suspected criminals opened fire on the patrollers, seriously injuring a police officer who was not on duty but took part in the patrol as a concerned resident.

"A shootout between the criminals and the group ensued.

"A police officer and al as resident, Mxolisi Mkhize, were injured. Mkhize later died in hospital," she said.

One alleged suspect was injured. He is currently in hospital under police guard.

A police officer who was at the scene, but asked not to be named, said when police arrived they found Ndiyane dead.

"He was bleeding from the face and the back. He was stabbed several times and stoned to death," he said.

He said that police recovered five cellphones, allegedly robbed from residents in the morning," he said.

Makhosi Mncube, Mxolisi's sister, said: "He was a lovely young man. They robbed, stabbed and shot him before parading him naked last week and now he is dead."

KwaMashu police spokesperson Captain Phindile Nxumalo confirmed the incident.
