5 escaped prisoners rearrested

Mpumalanga police have rearrested five of the 15 prisoners who escaped from the holding cells of the Siyabuswa police station.

The 15 escaped from the holding cells by sawing through the iron bars on April 26 last month.

Police Superintendent Abie Khoabane of Mpumalanga said five of the escapees were arrested and sentenced.

He said Brian Ndlovu, 23, and Thabang Ramasehla, 23, were re- arrested on April 28 and were both sentenced to three years in prison for escaping from lawful custody.

Zama Xaba, 24, and Thulani Mathenjwa, 20, were arrested on April 30. Xaba was jailed for five years while Mathenjwa had his case postponed to Friday this week.

Dumisani Mashiane, 20, was rearrested on May 1 and was due to appear in court yesterday.
