The Tourism Indaba 2008 lived up to its premier position as Africa's top travel show with a record attendance of slightly under 13000 visitors. This year Indaba 2009 promises to outdo itself with attendance numbers.

Indaba is one of the largest tourism marketing events on the African calendar and one of the top three "must visit" events of its kind on the global calendar.

It showcases the widest variety of southern Africa's best tourism products, and attracts international visitors and media from across the world. This initiative is owned by South African Tourism.

This three-day event will be hosted at the Inkosi Albert Luthuli Convention Centre in Durban.

Durban ICC has been voted Africa's leading conference centre for six consecutive years by the World Travel Awards, showcasing South Africa's world-class conferencing capabilities.

When the global travel and tourism industry gather in the picturesque Durban city this month, the key issues dominating the proceedings are certain to be South Africa's countdown to the Fifa Confederations Cup next month and the 2010 Fifa World Cup.

Indaba's best of five must-attend events are:

l The Eteya Awards from 7pm to 8pm on Friday.

Top emerging tourism entrepreneurs will be honoured by South African Tourism and South African Breweries. Come and see how the local tourism industry creates jobs and empowers marginalised South Africans.

l Tourism Satellite Account media launch from 11am to 12.30pm on Saturday.

The Tourism Satellite Account is a unique venture that measures the total number of jobs that tourism creates in South Africa. It includes jobs created outside the tourism industry in auxiliary sectors such as banking, agriculture, medical and manufacturing.

l The opening ceremony is at 5pm to 6pm on Saturday.

This is a lavish celebration of the Indaba and the tourism industry that attracts sports celebrities and local government representatives on stage.

l Global Media Face Off from 10am to midday on Sunday.

The flagship Indaba 2009 media conference will be moderated by quirky CNN reporter Richard Quest. On the cards are the global economic crisis and its impact on World Cup preparedness, tourism, and on the larger local economy. Qualified panelists will discuss government and private sector initiatives and take questions from the audience.

l The Welcome Awards will be from 5pm to 7pm on Sunday.

South African Tourism and First National Bank will dish out awards to the frontrunners of travel and tourism business that excel in service delivery.
