Pay medics their due

No surprise public service doctors are outraged by the paltry 5 percent salary rise they have been offered.

No surprise public service doctors are outraged by the paltry 5 percent salary rise they have been offered.

We all know that doctors at public hospitals work inhuman hours under appalling conditions for scant compensation. Even the government recognised that when it promised to top up salaries with occupation-specific increases.

The medics waited for years, but got nothing. So in desperation they staged an illegal walkout to get the health department's ear.

The tactic succeeded, they returned to work, and now they've been offered a maximum 5percent pay hike.

That doesn't even cover what they have lost to inflation while waiting for their bosses to adjust their salaries.

They are fully justified to be flaming mad.

Our public healthcare system is broken. We cannot hope to fix it without enlisting the dedicated support of the doctors - and nurses - who provide services to patients.

And that will never happen, for so long as we treat them with such contempt they can barely practise their profession in the tawdry environment bungling bureaucrats provide.

Our public health service must pay its medical staff what they are worth, or soon none will be left to abuse.
