Bloemfontein Celtic eased their relegation woes when they beat Platinum Stars 2-0 in a thrilling Absa Premiership encounter at Free State Stadium yesterday, writes Thabo Johnson.
Phunya SeleSele's goals came through Moses Spandeel and Patrick Malokase who struck in each half.
Spandeel broke the visitors' resistance when he beat goalie Wanye Sandilands with a grasscutter in the 12th minute after collecting a loose ball just in front of Stars goalmouth.
Malokase, who squandered few scoring chances in the second stanza, had to wait until the 88th minutes to score the killer goal.
But credit should go to Sandilands who denied Celtic to win the match with an avalanche of goals when he made breathtaking saves.
Stars were reduced to 10 men when referee Matthew Dyer gave striker Luis Renteria his marching orders for unsporting behaviour in the 40th minute.
This after the striker remonstrated with the referee for not cautioning Celtic defender Thabo Nthethe who had fouled him.
Celtic defender Mbuyiselo Sambo was red-carded for a second bookable offence in the 89th minute.
l Meanwhile, there were bitter-sweet memories for the people of KwaNongoma, KwaZulu-Natal, when a Premiership match was played for the first time in the area yesterday.
The bitter memory was the defeat of their favourite team, AmaZulu, who were pipped 1-0 by Free State Stars at Ulundi Stadium. The goal was scored by Prince Olomu.
