In response to K Huddle's letter I wish to make it absolutely clear that those views are his and not of the majority of doctors at Chris Hani-Baragwanath Hospital.
Unfortunately, and it pains me to write this, the enthusiasm of young doctors has been suppressed by the apathy of the likes of Huddle.
Senior clinical staff have embraced an attitude that encourages mediocrity rather than excellence. The dictum that applies is: any care is better than no care.
By Huddle's own admission progress at the hospital has been slow. This is directly due to an inability to think outside of the box. Many senior clinical staff have become part of the furniture and are content in their comfort zones.
A short tour of the medical admissions and general wards will show a hospital on the brink of collapse. Equipment is at a premium but life is cheap. Nurses and junior doctors are demotivated and exhausted. We work without emotion, like the walking dead.
The people of Soweto deserve excellent healthcare by dedicated and valued healthcare professionals. We are not using patients as bargaining chips but are asking to be allowed to practice excellent medicine and be supported and remunerated accordingly. The lethargy of the health department and senior clinical staff will unfortunately continue to deny Soweto a proper service.
