Dealing with different personalities and different brands.

Have you always been involved in fashion? How did you get into the field?

I was brought up in the fashion industry. My grandfather and father have always been involved in clothing. I entered the business in 1992 and have never looked back.

Do you use local manufactures and fabrics?

All our garments are fully imported, we use the same design and factories as they do in the US and in Europe.

Why did you feel the Penguin label should be brought to South Africa?

The Penguin label has been around since 1957. We initially brought the label to South Africa in 1974, it evolved into a fully fledged golf brand and became known as Grand Slam. But, it was reinvented in 2002 as a high fashion 60s and 70s retro brand and re-launched as original Penguin. We believe their design and marketing teams have angled the brand to suit most markets. With guys like Brad Pitt wearing it, who wouldn't want to wear it.

What item of clothing has been the most popular in terms of sales?

Our basic golfer known as the earl, which has piping around the collar and placket, is our best seller,

Does your taste come into play or do you follow international trends?

We follow international trends. But, their selections are so large we can only buy about 30percent of the collection. So we have to use our skills and buy what we believe will work best in our market.

What are the top five must-have clothing items for men this winter?

Waistcoat, poor boy hat, dress up or dress down jackets, cardigans. And of course, don't forget your Penguin earl shirt. - Keitumetse Segoai
