After being trounced by the ANC in its rural strongholds in KwaZulu-Natal in last week's general elections, the IFP has begun the groundwork to stage a strong comeback in the local government elections in 2011.
The party says it is "closing all gaps" to hold on to its presence in the municipalities.
The IFP has lost key ground in the elections, especially in the provincial legislature.
From the previous 30 seats in the 2004 elections the IFP managed to get only 18 seats in this year's elections.
IFP national chairperson Zanele Magwaza-Msibi said they were planning to fight hard for the 2011 local government election.
Magwaza-Msibi said her party would embark on a series of "Siyabonga rallies" to thank voters.
The first rally will be held tomorrow at Zululand district at Ulundi Park on workers' day. Otherrallies will follow in the Amajuba and Ugu districts.
The IFP lost votes to the ANC in areas such as the Vulindlela, Maqongqo under Umgungundlovu municipalities but made inroads in parts of northern KwaZulu-Natal, including Abaqulusi and Nkandla.
The IFP also won votes in a number of areas on the north coast.
