The South African Democratic Teachers Union has congratulated its members on the support they showed the ANC during the elections.
"The leadership takes this opportunity to thank staff, organisers, elected officials and the thousands of members who worked tirelessly to campaign for this historic victory.
"Also our appreciation goes out to the thousands of teachers who were appointed by the IEC to assist with the elections. Particularly in the rural areas, teachers have since 1994 performed this valuable task in a professional manner, ensuring the smooth running of the democratic process."
The Gauteng South region regional secretary Ronald Nyathi saidteachers should now go back to their classrooms and put in a "110percent" effort.
"Now that the ANC has won the elections we would like to thank teachers for their starring role in the programmes that the union had for the elections.
"Now it is time for us to deliver quality service. We urge all our 10000 members in the South region to work hard."
He said as they had helped campaign for the ANC, they expected future president Jacob Zuma to ensure teachers received better salaries and working conditions.
"The comrades that we sent to parliament cannot betray us now. They have to ensure that teachers have classes with a manageable number of pupils and they must increase salaries."
He said that by giving their all, teachers would also be "giving a proper and befitting farewell to comrade Angie Motshekga".
Motshekga's term as education MEC ends this year. She is expected to go to parliament.
