The two major political rivals in the Western Cape, DA and ANC, yesterday joined a march against crime in Cape Town.
Hundreds of people, including SAPS members, took part in the "awareness march" organised by 567 Cape Talk under Primedia's Crime Line banner. They took to the streets of Delft to appeal to the community to blow the whistle on criminals.
"Please pass on information about criminals to the authorities," said provincial police commissioner Mziwandile Petros.
Outgoing Western Cape premier Lynne Brown and Cape Town mayor Helen Zille joined in the march.
The Crime Line initiative appeals to the public to pass on information anonymously via SMS to 32211. More than 730 criminals have been arrested since the campaign was launched in 2007.
Addressing the gathering, Crime Line head Yusuf Abramjee said: "We must say enough is enough. It is our duty as South Africans to assist the police by passing on information."
Zille, who is expected to become the new premier of the Western Cape within days, said: "Today is Freedom Day and you came out in large numbers to say you want a safer community. Let's reclaim our freedom."
Abramjee invited the DA and the ANC to join hands in front of the crowd. Zille and Brown did so, to loud cheering. - Sapa
