The top three political parties threw lavish celebrations at the weekend to mark their performance in this year's general elections.

The ANC celebrated at Nasrec in Johannesburg and at the City Hall in Durban. The celebration in Johannesburg had top artists and club DJs lined up to entertain the crowd and the VIPs.

Members of the ruling party's national executive committee, MECs and MPs danced to Brenda Fassie's Mina ngohlala ndi nje, which had been converted into a pro-ANC song for the election campaign.

The celebrations in Durban saw elated supporters walk the streets carrying coffins symbolising the death of the IFP, DA, Cope, UDM and MF in KwaZulu-Natal

At the Wanderers Club, Johannesburg, Cope president Mosiuoa Lekota told party members to celebrate the victory of the party.

Mvume Dandala said Cope leaders going to Parliament will not disappoint its constituency.

Party treasurer Hilda Ndude said: "Cope has run its first marathon successfully and is looking forward to 2014."

The DA celebrated at the Cape Town Airport on Thursday to welcome party leader Helen Zille back from Pretoria.
