An ANC supporter was shot dead and seven were injured when they were ambushed while celebrating the party's election victory in KwaZulu-Natal's Swayimani area outside Pietermaritzburg, the party said yesterday afternoon.

ANC provincial spokesperson Nomfundo Mcetywa said a motorcade of ANC supporters was attacked in the Swayimani area.

One man was shot dead and seven were seriously injured, Mcetywa said.

The police were not available to comment.

Mcetywa said it was clear that the incident was a hit as the cars forming the motorcade belonged to ANC supporters.

"We strongly believe that it was a hit because it happened when our members were celebrating our victory. We call upon the police to hunt down the perpetrators."

Netcare 911's Chris Botha said the scene was tense with "two opposition political parties".

"Seven people sustained gunshot wounds and a 20-year-old male died as a result of severe injuries he had. Paramedics from the provincial service and Netcare had their hands full to stabilise all the patients," he said.

He said they were taken ambulance to Pietermaritzburg hospitals for treatment. - Sapa
