Hendrick Ramaala is out to end the monopoly of the mighty Kenyans in the Flora London Marathon on Sunday.
Ramaala, 37, left for London on Wednesday night in high spirits. This will be his eighth appearance in this prestigious marathon and he has the distinction of finishing in the top 10 every time.
Prior to leaving for London, the Ga-Molepo, Limpopo-born Ramaala won the Nedbank Matha Series 21,1 km half marathon in Middleburg three weeks ago.
"Everything went perfectly well in the preparations, I'm looking forward to a tough marathon where, as usual, the giants of road running will be in action," said Ramaala. "It goes without saying that Sunday's race will be a great one after the Kenyans sent out an early warning that they are going for a new world record.
"With the World Championships taking place in Berlin in August, everybody is going out for an excellent finish in terms of time."
Ethiopian legend Haile Gebrselassie holds the world record of 2hrs:03mins:59secs.
The Kenyan duo of Martin Lel and Sammy Wanjiru start as hot favourites in London. Reigning champ Lel is hoping to achieve an unprecedented fourth London Marathon crown.
