The Independent Electoral Commission in Limpopo has played down reports that ANC business card-type posters wer distributed in various voting stations in the province on election day.
Provincial electoral officer Nkaro Mateta said that after receiving reports about such practices they visited voting stations and found "nothing".
She said they had since consulted with the IEC legal unit which cleared the matter saying "it was not a big issue".
"We have also consulted with our conflict resolution team prior to consulting with the legal team and the issue of the distribution of business card-type posters to voters was cleared," said Mateta yesterday.
Members of the media witnessed the distribution of the cards at the Mponegele Primary School in Seshego, where ANC Youth League president Julius Malema voted. Those responsible for distributing the cards at Malema's stronghold were his childhood friends.
But Mateta said they had responded promptly to some of the complaints to ensure the smooth running of the elections.
She said they were able to attend to problems that occurred in some of the voting stations on election day.
Mateta said they were happy there were no major discrepancies that were discovered during the elections.
"We received a few complaints relating to the elections but they were not major."
She said some voting stations had ran out of ballot papers but the problem was attended to "as a matter of urgency".
"In general, voting went well and as the IEC we are convinced this year's elections will be declared free and fair," said Mateta.
Among other challenges was the erection of tents belonging to political parties next to voting stations, which was a breach of the electoral code.
"We had received complaints about tents erected close to voting stations and we reacted quickly to remove them."
By late yesterday, preliminary results indicated the ANC was leading in Limpopo, followed by Cope and then the DA
The final results were, however, not available at the time of going to print.
