Grobbelaar followed up his first round of 76 with an 82 at Randpark Golf Club on Tuesday, and was later joined by Van Zyl, who posted a sublime round of 77 in bitterly cold conditions.
The general consensus is that with Grobbelaar having twice finished second and once third in this tournament, this should be his year.
At 53, Van Zyl has all the experience against his younger opponents, and an improvement in his putting form on Tuesday could be the key to another national title for him.
Singh also brings a wealth of experience to the top of the leader board, having finished third in this tournament in 2007 and second in last year's Scottish Open. He surged into contention with a 77 on Tuesday and may also feel he is due a victory here after several years of coming close.
