President Kgalema Motlanthe, was among the first to vote early yesterday morning.
He was welcomed by IEC chairperson Brigalia Bam and chief electoral officer Pansy Tlakula at the Colbyn recreational park polling station in Tshwane.
He shook hands with about 100 people in the queue before casting his vote.
Motlanthe said the voting process was painless, uplifting and reassuring.
He said the first thing that came to his mind when he woke up in the morning was to hope that the weather "be merciful" and that voters would not be faced with any problems.
"This is so that we have a smooth voting process and get on with the business," Motlanthe said.
He said all political parties taking part in the elections should know that they were making a major contribution because everyone taking part in the elections were shaping the political direction of the country.
"We want this to be a participatory democracy," he said.
Cope president Mosiuoa Lekota also arrived early to vote at Oranje Meisies Skool in Bloemfontein.
Lekota stood chatting to other voters and the media, while waiting his turn to cast his vote.
