Young and old at the Compass Home in Edenvale, Ekurhuleni, were delighted with Mama Angel's generous donation of nappies, groceries and baby formula.
The organisation accommodates destitute people for a year. During this time, occupants are given counselling, food, shelter and spiritual upliftment.
They are also taught basic skills so they can earn an income when they leave.
The organisation was founded by Jude Martin, pastor of Compass for Christ Church.
The nongovernmental organisation has another branch in KwaZulu-Natal with 42 children and one in Witbank,Mpumalanga, which provides safety to nine children from abusive and vulnerable homes.
The Edenvale branch was started in October 2007 after Revirt Risk Management Company donated the property to the church. It now houses 10 families from all around Johannesburg.
Compass spokesperson Joy Sarkis said: "The organisation is Christian based. People come to us pregnant and often abused. We take them in and provide them with a place to sleep, food and emotional support.
"The groceries are much appreciated," Sarkis said. "Our only funding comes from corporate and private sponsors. We have a three-week-old baby and another one on the way. The formula and nappies are a godsend."
She said they try to keep families together, but if they can't they usually find them another place to live.
Occupant Tessa Marais said: "Compass has made me a better person. Through the light of God, my husband has finally found a job. Our children are also becoming more confident and at ease."
