Past political strife gives way to hope for future

Residents of the once violence-ravaged Magoda township in Richmond in the KwaZulu-Natal Midlands are optimistic about the elections.

They hope today's voting will result in much-needed development in their poor area.

The township hit headlines during the 1990s as a scene for politically related violence.

Ten years after expelled ANC-turned-UDM strong man Sifiso Nkabinde was gunned down, Richmond is battling to meet the daily challenges of its community.

While levels of intolerance were rife then, these days there appears to be an air of relaxation, with posters of various political parties hanging on street poles.

This is further illustrated by the fact that there was no police presence while some parts of the province were having visible policing. - Mhlaba Memela
