Two die at Evander gold mine

Two workers died at the Evander 9 shaft that forms part of Harmony's Evander operations in Mpumalanga, the gold mining company said yesterday.

Two workers died at the Evander 9 shaft that forms part of Harmony's Evander operations in Mpumalanga, the gold mining company said yesterday.

The deaths occurred on Friday afternoon, the company said in a statement.

It said the two workers died after "succumbing to oxygen deficiency while climbing into a travelling way of a discontinued production area".

"They were part of a team that was installing an electrical cable in a haulage," said Harmony.

The company's Management, together with the Minerals and Energy Department, started investigations on Friday.

"At the time of the incident, no mining was taking place," said Harmony. - Sapa
