News that 9000 police officers have been deployed ahead of tomorrow's election to various voting stations in KwaZulu-Natal, the scene of sporadic skirmishes between supporters of the ANC and IFP in recent weeks, is most welcome.

News that 9000 police officers have been deployed ahead of tomorrow's election to various voting stations in KwaZulu-Natal, the scene of sporadic skirmishes between supporters of the ANC and IFP in recent weeks, is most welcome.

Securing polling stations so that staff from the Independent Electoral Commission can conduct their work without any encumbrances as well as ensuring that citizens cast their votes free from coercion is paramount.

The deployment is, therefore, both timely and appropriate as it sends a tough message to agents provocateurs to expect the full might of the law in the event they carry out their designs to hold our democracy toransom.
