Newtown precinct offers educational excitement

Grade 12 pupils have every reason to flock to Newtown next month because there is a lot on offer in the precinct.

The Market Theatre, Dance Factory, Sci-Bono Discovery Centre, Artist Proof Studio, Market Photo Workshop and Museum Africa all have something on offer to enhance and enrich the Grade 12 curriculum.

There will be two theatre performances of set works for drama and English. The Sibikwa Art Centre will present George Orwell's Animal Farm at the Dance Factory from May 11 to 31. Orwell's chilling "fairy story" is a devastating satire on idealism betrayed by power and corruption, which has given the world the immortal phrase, "some are more equal than others".

At the Market Theatre drama students can experience John Kani's Nothing but the Truth from May 11 to June 21. The death of an estranged brother forces ageing librarian Sipho Makaya, with a daughter and a niece he has never met, to confront the betrayals, jealousies and animosities of the past, both political and personal.

Sci-Bono Discovery Centre presents an engaging programme which includes a tour of the largest science centre in Africa - exploring exhibits designed to inspire curiosity in maths, science and technology. Find out how a BMW really works: What's behind the light bulb? Learn more about sound and light and how optical illusions are created.

The Artist Proof Studios (APS) are offering a full and creative programme for groups of up to 30, including a walkabout of their premises.

The Market Photo Workshop will take 30 students on a guided tour of an exhibition entitled Amelioration by Tracey Edser.

Museum Africa presents a tour of Gandhi's Johannesburg and the birth of Satyagraha (peaceful resistance) to groups of students.
