Platinum Stars ran riot over Maritzburg United with an authoritative 4-0 win in a lop-sided Absa Premiership match at Olen Park Stadium yesterday.

It took the home side nine minutes to open the floodgate through Willem Jackson, pictured.

The veteran defender brilliantly guided a Dillon Sheppard free kick into the net.

The goal inspired the hosts as they continued to exert pressure on the hapless United.

The second goal came through a header of forward Luis Renteria after another square pass from the burgeoning Sheppard four minutes from the break.

Renteria grabbed his second goal the match after beating Tashrique Goldman from the penalty spot.

At this time United were all over United and it did not come as a total surprise when they scored the fourth goal through Sheppard who had a storming match. His virtuoso performance earned him the Man of the Match award.

The Team of Choice finished the match with 10 men after Collin Zimba got a red card in the 69th minute for a second bookable offence.

l Bay United are now firm favourites to go straight to the National First Division at the end of the season after dropping two valuable points at home in another Premiership dual yesterday.

They were held to a 1-1 draw by AmaZulu at the slightly windy Port Elizabeth Stadium.

Both teams were evenly-matched, but Umlilo looked more threatening up front.

The hosts opened the scoring four minutes after the restart with a fine header from Patrick Mayo.

The goal was well-received by the side's supporters who were convinced their team will gain the three crucial points at stake. But that was never to be as Ntokozo Sikhakhane levelled matters from close range after in the 70th minute.
