One fine weekend in March, the stars came out to play, planted seeds of hope and helped nurture future theatre stars - all in the ongoing fight against crime and criminality.

Some of them signed autographs and posed with their fans, while others conducted theatrical performance workshops, taught aspirants the importance of protecting entertainers' rights and gave motivational talks.

Mmabana Cultural Centre in Mafikeng in North West was the glorious venue.

The occasion was the 12th yearly Stop Crime Drama Festival.

The popular event is a nation-building partnership project of the Absa Foundation, North West sports, arts and culture department, the Aggrey Klaaste Nation Building Foundation, Sowetan and Business Arts SA.

The professional writers who fine-tuned the novices' plays included Kere Nyawo, Xoli Norman, Mpho Siboa, Monde Mayephu, Mzokes Thwane and Mpho Molepo.

Guest productions by established artists included Selaelo Maredi's The Core, Ntshieng Mokgoro's Thursday's Child and Selaelo Maredi's Black Age, which was directed by Danny Jasson.

Veteran actor Boikie Mohlamme presented a workshop on performers' rights under the auspices of the Creative Workers Union of South Africa.

Aspirants were treated to lively motivational and theatre workshops by arts and culture activist Mpho Molepo, Isidingo's Tina Mnumzana, Generations' Peter Moruakgomo, Zone 14's Carol Behane, Muvhango star Rapulana Seiphemo and Rhythm City's Mduduzi Mabaso.

Another wellknown Generations actor, Seputla Sebogodi, staged a gospel music performance with his band, G Movement.

Excited members of the public mingled with Mponeng actor Peter Mashego, Generations performer Rantebeng Makapan and Mzee Wa Two Six celebrity Kholofelo Kola.
