The National Youth Services programme in Limpopo has come to a grinding halt.

Trainees downed tools yesterday at the Sibasa offices of Limpopo's department of public works .

More than 570 youths were taken in for a year' s training last year, which ends this month.

At the centre of the row are allegations that Public Works Minister Geoff Doidge had announced earlier that his department would "create a million jobs" at the end of March - apparently to accommodate the trainees in permanent posts.

The announcement was made in a department newsletter earlier this year - but MEC Machuene Semenya said during the launch of the national youth services programme at GaMaraba that they would only absorb 5percent of the trainees.
