Sadtu fails our children

It is clear by now that the SA Democratic Teachers Union's Soweto regional secretary Ronald Nyathi sees himself as a grown-up version of Julius Malema.

It is clear by now that the SA Democratic Teachers Union's Soweto regional secretary Ronald Nyathi sees himself as a grown-up version of Julius Malema.

Having said earlier in the year that normal teaching in Soweto would only return once Jacob Zuma had been confirmed as the next president, he now says he is opposed to the SA Council of Educators (Sace) naming and shaming teachers who sexually abuse children they are supposed to teach. In his wisdom, "Sace is out to destroy the teachers' careers".

Just this week Sowetan ran a story of a teacher being jailed for life for violating a 12-year-old child. As the judge in that case said, "justice demands that young children be protected". The court could have extended this need to protect them from the poisonous thoughts that linger in the heads of the Nyathis of this world.

It is bad enough that this man is not only allowed, but is paid to be close to children. It is worse though that Sadtu nationally does not seem prepared to tell this Malema wannabe where to get off.

If Sadtu cannot be trusted with getting one of their own from spewing nonsense, then it is for the parents to raise a stink. It is their children that Nyathi says their being raped matters less than their rapists' reputations or careers.
