South Africa's Rik de Voest did not need to sweat much to qualify for the quarterfinals of the Soweto Tennis Open after beating Carlos Poch-Gradin of Spain 7-6 (7-2)6-3 in Soweto yesterday.

De Voest is among a horde of top tennis players from across the world who are taking part in the tournament at the historic Arthur Ashe Tennis Complex in Jabavu.

De Voest beat Chris Eaton of Great Britain 6-24-66-1 in his first match and will meet Karol Beck of Slovakia in the quarterfinals.

The South African Davis Cup player assumed the number one spot when South Africa played Denmark and Macedonia at Emperors Palace.

Fabrice Santoro of France did not have problem brushing aside Raven Klaasen of South Africa 6-46-2.

Santoro will next meet compatriot Nicolas Mahut in today's quarterfinals.

The semifinals will be played tomorrow and the final on Sunday.
