Umsinga, in the KwaZulu-Natal Midlands, is gripped by fear following the murders of three young men by unknown assailants.

The assailants shot them dead on Wednesday night while four others were seriously injured.

The murderous attack occurred in a remote area near Tugela Ferry.

The deceased, who were close friends, are Mxolisi Gugu Mvelase, Velaphi Benya and Mhlabuyajika Celumusa Sokhela.

The injured are Sakhiseni Xaba, Siyabonga Gasa, Zamane Langa and Salani Sokhela.

Mxolisi's brother, Perfect Mvelase, said the killings had shocked the community. "We are devastated by the way they were killed.

"I was with them a few hours before, and I left them drinking at the Why Not tavern.

Though the motive behind this incident is unclear, some people speculated that the killings could be related to taxi feuds.

Police spokesperson Senior Superintendent Henry Budhram said: "Several expended AK 47, R1, R4, and R5 cartridges were found at the crime scene. The motive for the attack is unknown."

KwaZulu-Natal MEC for community safety and liaison Bheki Cele said that the national safety and security cluster would carry out an inspection of the Umsinga-Greytown area tomorrow.
