Trainees down tools over posts

The National Youth Services programme came to a standstill in the Sibasa offices of the Limpopo department of public works when trainees downed tools yesterday.

The more than 570 youths were taken in for a year-long training last year, which comes to an end this month-end.

At the centre of the row are allegations that Minister of Public Works Geoff Doidge had allegedly announced that his department would create a million jobs at the end of march, apparently to accommodate the trainees in permanent posts.

The announcement was made in one of the departmental newsletters - Rea Shoma - for early this year.

But the trainees were taken by surprise when Limpopo public works MEC Machuene Semenya said during the launch of the NYS at GaMaraba in Mashashane that they would only absorb five percent of the trainees.
