KwaZulu-Natal police are searching for a street kid for the attempted murder of an elderly man on Tuesday at his coastal home in Trafalgar, south of Durban.

The 69-year-old man, whose name is being withheld, was yesterday lying in hospital in a critical condition after the attack.

Police yesterday said they were still searching for the suspect, apparently a street kid in the area, saying that it was not yet clear if the man had accommodated his attacker at his home.

The victim had been severely assaulted in the head and body with a panga.

Although police could not say whether the victim knew his attacker, they say they are relying on the preliminary investigation to reveal what happened since there were no signs of forced entry into his home.

Provincial police spokesperson Vincent Mdunge said: "It is not clear how the child managed to gain entry into the man's home. There were no signs of forced entry into the victim's home."

Netcare 911 spokesperson Chris Botha said when the paramedics team arrived at the crime scene the man "was lying in a pool of blood, unconscious".
