Local hip-hop artist Crazy Lu, formerly of the musical group Jozi, has hit gold.
He has signed a major recording deal with Obvious Choice Incorporated - a US music label - and will collaborate with top American hip-hop artist Lil' Bow Wow.
As part of the deal, Lu is shooting a video for his next single, Surfer Girl, a rock song, which is a departure from what made Jozi popular.
He features Lil' Bow Wow on the new album.
"A contract with a US label is a breakthrough for anyone," said a friend.
"I got the contract while I was with Jozi. I wanted to go solo and concentrate on both the American and Japanese markets while the Jozi guys wanted to target the Japanese market only," an excited Lu told Sowetan yesterday.
"I am excited and need to get this album out, which will be released in the US on July 7. It has 18 songs, seven of which were produced by Lil' Bow Wow."
He is based in Atlanta, Georgia, where he also runs a consultancy company with his Japanese business partner. His new album, Zulu Sushi, is a mix of rock and hip-hop.
"I want this one out soon so that I can start working on my next album," he said.
