Former president Thabo Mbeki is set to come under increased pressure to come clean about being "the brains behind Cope" and his suspected role in the "political conspiracy" against ANC president Jacob Zuma.

Political analysts say the recent wave of "Mbeki-bashing" by top ANC members is the party's way of demanding a response from him.

"There is a strong suspicion that Mbeki is very involved in Cope, and now the NPA tapes imply that he was the puppet master in some kind of conspiracy against Zuma," said University of Cape Town politics lecturer Zwelethu Jolobe.

The ANC suspects Mbeki is "the big man in Shell House" that former Scorpions boss Leonard McCarthy refers to in taped phone calls to former NPA boss Bulelani Ngcuka.

Last week Zuma aide Zizi Kodwa accused Mbeki of "mobilising" Archbishop Desmond Tutu to discredit Zuma.
