Most of the hungry had their parents and grandparents before them suffer the same fate but we had hoped democracy would change this chilling statistic.
Fascist governments came and went, now self-proclaimed political leaders of all stripes from communist to conservative huff and puff about a better life for all.
Yet we regularly report on their venal colleagues who raid school and hospital feeding schemes, stealing food out the mouths of society's most vulnerable.
It is no excuse that hunger is a worldwide problem afflicting even the richest of countries. Our world is awash in food and agribusiness will often destroy stock to keep prices high. The problem comes in distributing it to the poor.
Too many of our fellow citizens still can't put enough food on the table to sustain themselves properly. And a malnourished body is more susceptible to assaults from infections and disease; a malnourished mind can never realise its potential.
So let's pause in this electioneering season to interrogate politicians with two simple questions: how will you and your party end hunger now, and why have you failed to eliminate it by now?
