There was pandemonium when a group of 12 armed men attacked three security guards who had just collected money from the Medi-Cross centre in Nelspruit yesterday afternoon.

The Protea Coin security guards were attacked by the men travelling in three vehicles, one of them a black Hummer, at the parking lot along Rothery Street.

An undisclosed amount of money was stolen.

"The incident happened shortly after 12.30pm," said Nelspruit police spokesperson Inspector Dawie Pretorious yesterday.

He said the robbers seriously assaulted two of the guards with fists and gun butts before disarming them.

"The robbers managed to take an unknown amount of cash and sped away from the scene in three vehicles," Pretorius said.

The two injured guards were taken to hospital for treatment.

People who were passing next to the centre and those who had parked their vehicles in the lot ran for their lives as soon as they realised a heist was in progress.

Policemen arrived at the scene within minutes of the heist.

Pretorius later said he had received information that the getaway vehicles had been abandoned in the nearby suburb of Steiltus. Police investigations are continuing.
