In the space of a week, the wage strike by 20 000 employees in the road freight industry has been characterised by a series of disturbing incidents of violence.

A strike is recognised universally as a bargaining tool available to workers to coerce managements to accede to their demands.

But such industrial action must be conducted within the parameters of the law. Yesterday, a non-striking truck driver was forced to strip and join the action during a gathering of the drivers in the Johannesburg city centre. This illustrates intolerance.

Just as the law affirms the right of workers to strike in favour of their demands, it is equally categoric about protecting the rights of those sceptical of such an action.
