A woman was forced to give birth on the side of the road during a morning rush hour after a taxi driver ordered her to jump off his vehicle when she experienced labour pains.
She gave birth to a healthy baby boy at the Warrick Triangle in Durban with the help of the community and the police.
It was all excitement when a baby boy was delivered while passers-by congratulated her in disbelief yesterday.
It is believed that the woman was on her way to work in the taxi when her water broke on the Warrick Triangle corner of Canongate and Wills roads.
ER24 spokesperson Derrick Banks said paramedics were alerted after receiving information about a pedestrian knocked over by a car.
"Upon arrival, they found a woman lying on the pavement and being helped by members of the public. It was not a pedestrian as reported but a woman who was in the final stage of giving birth on the pavement."
Banks said the taxi driver allegedly ordered the woman out of his vehicle and left her and her sister on the side of the road.
"Moments later she started to give birth. We appreciate the involvement of the community and members of the police for helping to bring the baby into the world.
"The baby and mother were checked before being taken to hospital in a stable condition."
However, the baby's mother has instructed Parklands Hospital staff not to allow the media to see her as she was not keen to discuss her experience.
A hawker, Thembeka Dlamini, who was one of the people who helped the woman give birth, said it was scary what happened.
She said she heard from the men who transport their vegetables that there was a woman giving birth on the side of the road.
"We called the police and the ambulance. It is sad that taxi drivers can be so heartless."
Dlamini said she was happy that the woman gave birth safely under extreme conditions while people were walking around.
