Art lovers and buyers will come out in numbers for an auction at St John's College in Houghton, Johannesburg.

The auction on April 23 will be staged in conjunction with a picnic to raise funds for a project called "441 Drive Against Malnutrition".

Formed by ex-game rangers James Hendry and Alex van den Heever, the project is in reaction to a report released by the UN's Millenium Goals Development team last year.

According to the report, a quarter of children in Africa suffer from long-term malnutrition.

"We found that this problem also persists in the rural areas of Mpumalanga. Our solution was to develop a cost-effective soy and maize-based dietary supplement called Nhlayisa Power Supply.

"It contains the vitamins and minerals that are usually missing from the starch-based meals of many families in rural areas."

Together with their friends, they launched the 441 project.

"We want to supply 400 children in 4 orphanages for 1 year with Nhlayisa Power Supply. To do this, we need to raise R200000."

The fundraising bid will be launched through the picnic and art auction.

Poppy Ntshonwana, a 5Fm deejay, will host an auction of wildlife art works by artists such as Dylan Lewis, Bruce Little, Leigh Voight and Emily Lamb.

Ian Thomas and Alex van den Heever will give entertaining talks, and James Hendry will perform his popular campfire songs.

Tickets cost R250 each.
