The organisers and sponsors of the Old Mutual Two Oceans Marathon that takes place in Cape Town on Saturday have put together festivities to celebrate the race's 40th anniversary.

More than 20000 runners from South Africa and abroad are expected to take part.

The ultra event starts at 6.25am from Main Road in Newlands and finishes at the University of Cape Town.

Mluleki Nobanda, Bethuel Netshifhefhe, Sipho Ngomane and Marco Mambo are among the top marathoners who will sweat it out for glory in the men's section of the ultra marathon.

The Nurgalievas - Olesya and Elena from Russia - should give the likes of Farwa Mentoor and Grace de Oliveira a tough time in the women's category.

The half-marathon will start at the same venue at 6am and also ends at the university.

The festivities begin today with the largest running-related expo in the country, which runs until Friday.

Athletes will have a chance to register at the expo where they can also collect their race numbers.

The organisers are on Friday expecting a rush of runners from outside the city and are pleading with the Cape Town-based athletes to register today and tomorrow.

Other interesting events include fun runs on Friday such a 56m Nappy Dash, 300m Toddlers' Trot, a 2,5km and 5km.

International participants are invited to be a part of the International Friendship Run, also on Friday, starting at the Good Hope Centre at 9am.

The race office has received special permission to go over Chapman's Peak on race day.

But no spectators will be allowed access to the scenic Peak.
