Pamodzi miners to take to the streets

About 3000 employees from Pamodzi Gold's President Steyn operations are expected to hold a mass demonstration in Welkom today.

About 3000 employees from Pamodzi Gold's President Steyn operations are expected to hold a mass demonstration in Welkom today.

Trade union Solidarity said yesterday that its members and those of the National Union of Mineworkers would hold the demonstration in the Free State town in protest of the non-payment of salaries as well as the large-scale job losses that could result from the company's funding and liquidity crisis.

According to Solidarity, President Steyn employees have only received 70percent of their February salaries while employees of both President Steyn and Pamodzi's East Rand mine have not yet received their March salaries.

Solidarity deputy general secretary Dirk Hermann said Pamodzi employees were "now fed up" and were demanding management honour their promises.

"The non-payment of salaries and the possible job losses facing employees do not only spell a crisis, but the situation is heading for disaster," said Hermann.

The march will take place from the Pamodzi 1 shaft to the Pamodzi 2 shaft at Pamodzi Free State's head office outside Welkom.

Pamodzi was last week placed under judicial management with the company in urgent need of cash to sustain its business. - I-Net Bridge
