Former Limpopo premier Sello Moloto has slammed the way in which head of the National Prosecuting Authority Mokotedi Mpshe has dropped the charges against ANC president Jacob Zuma.
Zuma, who looks set to become South Africa's president after the April 22 national elections, became a free man when Mpshe dropped the charges on Monday.
He had faced charges including fraud, corruption and racketeering.
The NPA said the case had been manipulated for political reasons and cleared the way for Zuma to become the next president without the threat of a trial looming.
Mpshe also said former NPA boss Bulelani Ngcuka and his alleged accomplice, Leonard McCarthy, former boss of the Scorpions, were likely to face charges.
Moloto, who is the Congress of the People's candidate for Limpopo premier, said Mpshe had failed to explain how Ngcuka and McCarthy's alleged interference had "substantively and materially" influenced the case.
He said Mpshe also did not explain why the matter was not taken to the courts over whether or not to drop the charges.
He said the decision was a "step backwards for the country and undermined public confidence in the judicial system".
"The matter should end up in the highest court, if needs be."
NPA spokesperson Tlali Tlali said yesterday he would have to consult his bosses before commenting on the matter.
