Athletics South Africa (ASA) and the Comrades Marathon Association have decided to bring the marathon forward to accommodate this year's Confederations Cup and next year's World Cup.

Leonard Chuene, ASA president, said they were working closely with the soccer family in this country to ensure the success of the two competitions.

It will be the first time in the history of this celebrated ultra distance event that it will take place in May in the next two years.

Traditionally, this marathon is held in June.

"The biggest events in June in the next two years will be the Confederations Cup and World Cup, we all have to support Dr Irvin Khoza and his committee [the Local Organising Committee]," said Chuene.

"Those guys have done a wonderful job to bring the World Cup here, every South African must contribute to the success of the tournament.

The 2010 Comrades Marathon will be the 85th running of the race and the CMA is gearing up for the most spectacular race.
