ANC alliance partners call for Mbeki to be charged

Canaan Mdletshe

ANC alliance partners - Cosatu, SACP and Sanco - have called for former president Thabo Mbeki, former NPA boss Bulelani Ngcuka and former Scorpions boss Leonard McCarthy to be charged.

Addressing crowds outside the Durban high court yesterday soon after Jacob Zuma's "last court appearance", Cosatu secretary-general Zwelinzima Vavi said those that have been implicated in plotting a conspiracy against Zuma should be charged.

"We have fought a very important battle. We were called names, we were ridiculed and lampooned for supporting Zuma," Vavi said.

He said now that the NPA has thrown in the towel, it was time for those implicated to be brought before court.

"The 'Number One' in Luthuli House or the 'Big Man' must go to court. Unlike Zuma, we have no forgiveness against them.

"All those who hatched the plan against Zuma must go to court," said Vavi.

He then took a swipe at Cope presidential candidate Mvume Dandala, saying he has lost all the respect he had for him.

"I have loved that man. I had absolute respect for Dandala, but not now after aligning himself with people who had mobilised for darkness.

"I wonder how he slept yesterday (Monday). I wonder how his conscience is now," he said.

SACP secretary-general Blade Nzimande followed suite. He said he was happy that as SACP, they have been principled about the decision to support Zuma from the beginning.

"We knew that if we allow this to happen to Zuma, it would come to Vavi, Zweli (Mkhize) right down to people at grass roots level. I know that there have been people who thought that they would rule this country forever, but it was not going to be," he said.
