Two brothers were killed yesterday when their car collided head-on with another during an illegal street racing.

Thulane Hlophe, 15, and his 27-year-old brother, Sbusiso, were pronounced dead after their BMW 325 collided with an oncoming car in Barberton's General Street in Mpumalanga during the race.

Barberton police spokesperson Jabu Ndubane said according to eyewitnesses, Sbusiso, who was driving, did not see an on-coming Nissan bakkie during a race with a black Golf 5.

A number of BMWs, referred to as gusheshes, take part in the events almost every weekend.

Racing in the streets of townships such as KaNyamazane, Daantjie, Barberton and Matsulu are common.

The driver of the bakkie, Nkosinathi Dlamini, and his passenger, Joyce Khumalo, sustained serious injuries and are in critical condition at a local hospital.

"The driver of the Golf 5 escaped and a search for him is under way. We're requesting members of the public who may have an idea of his whereabouts to come forward," said Ndubane.

Meanwhile, a police constable is in critical condition at Nelspruit's Medi-Clinic after he was involved in an accident.

Ndubane said yesterday that Muzi Mabunda, who is attached to Barberton police station, sustained serious injuries when his car crashed into the back of a truck.
