A Mpumalanga tycoon was shot dead in the early hours of Saturday and the motive for his killing is unknown.

The unknown gunmen did not take anything when they shot Robert Shai outside his KaBokweni house.

Overwhelmed with grief, his wife was unable to talk when Sowetan approached her for comment yesterday.

Two years ago Shai survived another hit on him by strangers when he was shot in the legs.

Shai co-owned a security company with his wife, Judy Letswele.

Shai's relatives said he he had just returned home from fetching one of his security guards, who was on duty at White River shopping complex, 40km away.

His niece Tsakane Shai said she was in the house with other relatives when she heard gunshots at about 3am.

This was a few minutes after her uncle had parked his Corsa bakkie, which was dented by bullets.

"We were sleeping with his two-year-old daughter when we heard gunshots. We didn't see the people who shot him," she said.

Constable Muzi Ngomane yesterday said: "The police have learnt with great shock about the death of Shai who was a crime-fighter in our community as chairperson of the community policing forum. May his soul rest in peace."

Shai is survived by his wife and five children.
