An alleged boozing spree after an ANC electioneering campaign in Limpopo over the weekend claimed the life of one of the party's most committed members in the province.

Steven Makwakwa, 26, was knocked down and killed by a speeding taxi while trying to cross a busy road in Giyani.

Giyani police spokesperson Thomas Makhubele yesterday confirmed the accident and said police had opened a culpable homicide docket and that investigations were continuing.

Makwakwa was allegedly coming from a drinking spree after a door-to-door campaign in Homu 14 C, outside Giyani, when the accident claimed his life.

Members of the ANC in the province visited the Makwakwa family before a rally yesterday to offer their condolences to the bereaved relatives, friends and colleagues.

Local ANC deputy chairperson Joshua Matlou said the loss of Makwakwa was a serious blow to the party, the people of the province and his family.

Matlou said Makwakwa died when a lot was still expected of him and two weeks before his efforts to help the ANC to victory in the coming elections were about to be realised.

Matlou promised the family that the ANC would assist the family in making sure that Makwakwa was given a decent funeral.
