One of Gauteng's most wanted criminals and cop killer, Mpiliso "Sgonondo" Ndlovu, was shot dead in Etwatwa, Ekurhuleni, threedays after he gunned down two police officers.
Ndlovu, 35, was on the run after he killed Inspector Abram Niki Sikgwele, 39, and an unnamed constable on Monday night.
National police spokesperson Senior Superintendent Vish Naidoo said Ndlovu, a Zimbabwean, was also wanted for the murder of seven other people, among them a priest, a father and his son.
Naidoo said some of Ndlovu's cases, which include about 70 robberies, dated back to 2004.
On Monday night, the crime intelligence unit members were in Diepsloot to arrest Ndlovu's gang.
As the two officers entered the shack in which the gang members were playing cards, Ndlovu who is alleged to have been the gang leader, pulled out a gun and shot the two officers several times. Both died on the spot.
But yesterday morning Ndlovu tasted his own medicine when he was shot dead inside a shack by members of the Pretoria-based task team in a shootout.
Residents of the informal settlement, near Daveyton, say the four-hour shootout started at about 4am.
"When police surrounded the shack, they called out to him to give himself up but he refused and shot at the police," said Naidoo.
After the shootout, police, assisted by three helicopters, stormed into the shack.
Inside, they found a dead Ndlovu and recovered a 9mm pistol allegedly stolen in a robbery in Douglasdale last month.
Three other people, among them a young woman believed to be Ndlovu's girlfriend, gave themselves up when the shack was surrounded and were immediately taken in for questioning.
