Political pardons opposed

The Pretoria high court will today hear an application by a coalition of civil organisations for an interdict preventing President Kgalema Motlanthe from pardoning more than 100 people convicted of apartheid-era political crimes.

The Pretoria high court will today hear an application by a coalition of civil organisations for an interdict preventing President Kgalema Motlanthe from pardoning more than 100 people convicted of apartheid-era political crimes.

The coalition, which includes the Centre for the Study of Violence and Reconciliation, said they would argue that the pardon process was unlawful because the victims had not been consulted.

It is asking that Motlanthe be prohibited from issuing any political pardons pending the final determination of the rights of victims by the court. - Sapa
