Steve Biko must be turning in his grave.
The play Biko, Where the Soul Resides,supposed to be a critique of his life, is embroiled in controversy. Top playwrights Martin Koboekae and Mfana Jones Hlophe are fighting over the idea of the play.
Hlophe, who currently appears in Soul City, claims that his firm, Eljay Productions, had commissioned Koboekae to do the play.
He said Koboekae claims the show belongs to him. Hlophe claims he was the creator of the show, which has been dismissed by Koboekae.
"I came up with the idea in 2006 and shared it with Hamilton Dlamini and Peter Mashego. They suggested Martin as the writer. We approached him and he agreed," Hlophe said.
"I knew I was going to be busy so I allowed Martin to run things. However, last year I was surprised to see posters saying Eljay Productions and the State Theatre would present Biko, Where the Soul Resides. What I want is to be recognised as an original creator."
