Police at Modimolle have launched a search for an awaiting trial prisoner who escaped from the holding cells at the weekend.

Maphuti Matlou, 32, was arrested in connection with the bombing of an ATM in April last year. He appeared in the Modimolle magistrate's court last Friday and escaped the following day.

Superintendent Malesela Ledwaba said they were investigating the circumstances of the escape.

Ledwaba said Matlou was arrested with three other suspects who are still incustody.

"We want to warn members of the public not to attempt to arrest Matlou as he might be dangerous to them," Ledwaba said.

He said anyone who have have assisted Matlou to escape from police custody would face the full might of the law.
